History

clipping. is a Los Angeles trio that sets rapid, precise rapping against production built from noise, field recordings and harsh electronics. Rapper Daveed Diggs works with producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes, who come from experimental and noise music and treat hip-hop conventions as material to bend. CLPPNG, their 2014 album for Sub Pop, took familiar rap forms such as club tracks and street narratives and rebuilt them from alarm clocks, static and abrasive textures. Splendor & Misery in 2016 went further, a science-fiction concept album about the lone survivor on a slave ship in space, and it was nominated for a Hugo Award. There Existed an Addiction to Blood in 2019 turned to horrorcore and horror film scores, with long stretches of dread and silence. Diggs also became widely known for his stage work, which brought new listeners to the group. What sets clipping. apart is the contrast between Diggs's clean, fast delivery and the cold, clattering soundscapes underneath, along with lyrics that read like tightly plotted fiction.
