Ava Max (born Amanda Ava Koci, February 16, 1994) is an American singer-songwriter raised in Chesapeake, Virginia by Albanian immigrant parents; her mother was a trained opera singer and her father a pianist. She moved to Los Angeles at 14 to pursue music, first appearing on Le Youth's 2017 dance hit "Clap Your Hands" before signing to Atlantic Records. Her 2018 debut single "Sweet but Psycho" became a global smash, topping charts in 22 countries and going double platinum in the US, though its US climb was unusually slow: it debuted at number 85 on the Billboard Hot 100 and took 23 weeks to crack the top 10. Her sound blends synth-pop and dance with the theatrical, empowerment-anthem style of influences like Sia and Lady Gaga. She released her debut album Heaven & Hell in 2020, followed by Diamonds & Dancefloors (2023) and Don't Click Play (2025), and contributed "Choose Your Fighter" to the Barbie soundtrack. She is also known for her signature asymmetrical hairstyle, which she nicknamed the "Max Cut."
