Country Rap

Country rap from the 2010s: banjo loop, trap hats, acoustic guitar, swaggering and playful in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Country rap puts rapping and hip-hop beats on top of country music, and its family tree is older than the name. Talking blues like Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" (1969) and Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" (1979) count among its prototypes, and in 1985 Sir Mix-a-Lot rapped in the voice of a white country boy on "Square Dance Rap". The phrase got a push from UGK: Pimp C called their records country rap tunes, a jab at Northern rappers who said Southern rap was not real hip-hop. Kid Rock described his 1999 song "Cowboy" as a cross between Run DMC and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and in 2005 Cowboy Troy mixed banjo, fiddle and acoustic guitar with shredding rock riffs and rap. The "Cruise" remix by Florida Georgia Line with Nelly became the first country single ever certified diamond by the RIAA. In 2017 Young Thug's "Family Don't Matter" is credited with popularising the Yee Haw movement of hip-hop producers borrowing from country, and in 2019 Lil Nas X's country trap single "Old Town Road" held number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for a record nineteen weeks.
