History

Cumbia rap is a spin-off of cumbia that keeps a fairly traditional Colombian rhythm and adds hip hop and reggae elements on top. Its first sketches came from Tex-Mex and Onda Chicana acts of the late 1980s and early 1990s: La Mafia, La Sombra and Selena y Los Dinos tried rap lyrics over cumbia beats. The style itself took shape in the late 1990s and early 2000s in Nuevo León, with El Gran Silencio, Control Machete, Pato Machete and Cartel de Santa. Crooked Stilo, a Los Angeles act of Salvadoran origin, joined the pioneers in 2003, the Kumbia Kings represented Texas, and other pioneers came from elsewhere in Mexico, among them Santa Fe Klan from Guanajuato and Chicos de Barrio from Coahuila.
