History

Florida Georgia Line pushed country radio towards hip-hop rhythm and rock guitar, and the style they popularised picked up the name bro-country: trucks, riverbanks, summer nights and a girl in the passenger seat, sung over a programmed beat. The duo of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley hit with Cruise, which became one of the best-selling country singles ever released and crossed over further still through a remix with Nelly. Their records keep the banjo and the steel guitar but put them on top of drum loops and stacked harmony vocals mixed like pop, which is why the style drew as much argument as it did sales. H.O.L.Y. showed they could hold a straight ballad, and Meant to Be, cut with Bebe Rexha, spent an extraordinarily long run at the top of the country chart while barely sounding like a country record. The pair later stepped back from the duo to work separately. What a listener recognises is the cadence: verses rapped more than sung, then a wide melodic chorus.
