History
Shaboozey sings country over hip hop bones. The Virginia artist, born to Nigerian parents, spent years releasing rap-leaning records before the mix settled into what it is now: acoustic guitar and a plain-spoken drawl sitting on top of programmed drums and a rapper's sense of cadence. A Bar Song (Tipsy) is the clearest example, built on an interpolation of J-Kwon's early-2000s club hit and turned into a barroom chorus that ran the whole of a summer and tied the record for the most weeks at number one on the American singles chart. Good News is the other register, slower and closer to folk, with the voice carrying most of the weight. Two appearances on Beyonce's Cowboy Carter put him in front of an audience that had been arguing about who country music belongs to, and the timing was not accidental: much of what made him visible was the same thing that made him awkward for the format. A listener recognises the rasp, the singalong hook and the drum programming underneath the twang.
