History

Kid Rock built a career on collision: Detroit hip-hop bravado welded to Southern rock riffs, turntable scratches sitting next to slide guitar. He came up in the Detroit scene as a rapper and DJ through the early nineties, playing small and often hostile rooms, and the breakthrough arrived at the end of the decade when Devil Without a Cause turned that mongrel sound into a mainstream format. Bawitdaba is the clearest snapshot of the early version: a chanted hook, a live band pushing the beat, vocals delivered somewhere between a rap and a bar-room holler. Cowboy set out the other half of the persona, rap swagger dressed in cowboy imagery, well before the country-rap crossover became an industry. From the mid-2000s he leaned further into classic rock and country, and All Summer Long, which folds two familiar radio songs into one nostalgic singalong, became his most widely known track. Listeners recognise the rasp, the mix of live drums with sampled beats, and the refusal to sit in one genre at a time.
