History
The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, childhood friends from Dartford, Kent, reconnected by chance on a train platform in 1961 over a shared love of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records, a meeting now marked by a blue plaque at Dartford railway station. The band's first stable lineup added multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, bassist Bill Wyman, and drummer Charlie Watts; guitarist Mick Taylor replaced Jones after his death in 1969, and Ronnie Wood took over after Taylor left in 1974. Rooted in blues and early rock and roll, the Stones led the British Invasion of 1964 and produced defining hits such as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Paint It Black," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Brown Sugar," and "Start Me Up," alongside landmark albums like Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Exile on Main St. They have sold over 250 million albums, won four Grammy Awards plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. By 2007 they had broken the record for highest-grossing concert tour three separate times.
