History
The Yardbirds formed in southwest London in 1963, growing out of an earlier group called the Metropolitan Blues Quartet. Rooted in Chicago blues covers, they became house band at Richmond's Crawdaddy Club, taking over from the Rolling Stones, before broadening into pop, psychedelic rock, and early hard rock, marked by their signature 'rave-up' instrumental breaks. Core members were singer/harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, and bassist Paul Samwell-Smith. Their defining trivia fact: the band's lead guitar chair passed in succession through Eric Clapton (1963-1965), Jeff Beck (1965-1966), and Jimmy Page (1966-1968), all three later ranked among the top five guitarists ever by Rolling Stone. Hits included 'For Your Love,' 'Heart Full of Soul,' 'Shapes of Things,' and 'Over Under Sideways Down.' After splitting in 1968, Page went on to form Led Zeppelin while Relf and McCarty formed Renaissance. The Yardbirds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and reformed with McCarty and Dreja that decade.
