History
The Troggs formed in Andover, Hampshire, England, in May 1964, when childhood friends Reg Presley (vocals) and Ronnie Bond (drums) built an R&B band, later joined by Pete Staples (bass) and Chris Britton (guitar). Signed by Kinks manager Larry Page in 1966, they cut a raw, riff-driven garage rock sound that critics later credited as a direct forerunner of punk. Their breakthrough single "Wild Thing" topped the US charts in July 1966, built around a simple heavy guitar riff, flirtatious lyrics, and an unlikely ocarina solo; it later ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "With a Girl Like You" hit UK number one the same year, and "Love Is All Around" became a worldwide standard after Wet Wet Wet's 1994 cover spent fifteen weeks at number one in the UK. At the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Jimi Hendrix closed his set with a cover of "Wild Thing," famously setting his guitar on fire. In 1991 the band recorded the collaborative album Athens Andover with three members of R.E.M. Reg Presley died in 2013; the group, now with different members, still performs.
