History

The Small Faces formed in East London in 1965: Steve Marriott on guitar and lead vocal, Ronnie Lane on bass, Kenney Jones on drums and Jimmy Winston on organ, with Ian McLagan replacing Winston within a year. The name came from their height and from mod slang. All or Nothing reached number one in Britain in 1966, carried by Marriott's shouted soul delivery over McLagan's Hammond. Itchycoo Park in 1967 used a phased mix that all but swallowed the drums, early for a pop single. Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, released in 1968 in a round sleeve made to look like a tobacco tin, topped the UK album chart and gave half its running time to a narrated fairy tale. Marriott left at the end of 1968 to start Humble Pie. The remaining three took on Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood and became the Faces.
