Style: Rock and roll
History
The Beatles formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960, growing out of John Lennon's skiffle group The Quarrymen. The classic lineup, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr (who replaced Pete Best on drums in 1962), built their early sound in Liverpool's Cavern Club and on residencies in Hamburg before signing with producer George Martin at EMI. Starting as an upbeat rock and roll and pop act with hits like "Love Me Do" and "She Loves You," they pushed into more ambitious, studio-based songwriting through albums such as Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Abbey Road, absorbing psychedelia, Indian instrumentation, and orchestral arrangements along the way. The group split in 1970 but remains the best-selling music act in history. One striking record: in April 1964 they held all top five positions on the US Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, a feat no other act has matched.
