History
Humble Pie turned British rhythm and blues into loud, sweaty hard rock, driven by one of the most powerful soul voices in rock. The band formed in 1969 when Steve Marriott left the Small Faces and teamed up with guitarist Peter Frampton from the Herd, bassist Greg Ridley from Spooky Tooth and teenage drummer Jerry Shirley. Early records mixed acoustic and heavy material, but by Rock On in 1971 they had settled on a tougher, riff-based style. Performance Rockin' the Fillmore, recorded live in New York that year, showed the band at full stretch, with long jams on blues and soul numbers, and it became their breakthrough in America. Frampton left soon after to go solo, Clem Clempson replaced him, and Smokin' in 1972 leaned even harder into the Marriott show, with "30 Days in the Hole" and "Hot 'n' Nasty". Humble Pie are recognised by Marriott's raw, gospel-inflected shouting, heavy blues riffs and a loose, swaggering groove that owes as much to American soul as to rock.
