History

The Appleseed Cast began in emo and gradually became one of the most atmospheric bands in American indie rock, with layered, delay-soaked guitars, long instrumental passages and vocals that often sit low in the mix like another texture. The band comes from Lawrence, Kansas and started out on Deep Elm Records in the late 1990s. The turning point was Low Level Owl, released in 2001 as two volumes on Deep Elm, an ambitious, sprawling work that blended song-based emo with ambient interludes and post-rock build-ups. Two Conversations, released on Tiger Style in 2003, pulled back toward tighter, more direct songwriting, while Sagarmatha, released on Graveface in 2009, leaned hard into instrumental post-rock. Across lineup changes, singer and guitarist Christopher Crisci remained the constant core. Their place sits between Midwest emo and post-rock, and many later bands blending those styles trace a line back to them. A listener recognises The Appleseed Cast by the shimmering guitar layers, the drums that drive long crescendos and a mood of wide open, slightly melancholy space.
