History
Incubus formed in 1991 in Calabasas, California, when high-school friends Brandon Boyd (vocals), Mike Einziger (guitar), and Jose Pasillas (drums) started playing together, later adding bassist Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich. The band reportedly went without a name for a while, settling on "Incubus" only when a venue needed one listed for an upcoming show. Early sets on LA's Sunset Strip built a funk-metal and nu-metal sound that later opened into alternative rock and pop rock. Signed to Immortal/Epic by the same A&R exec who signed Korn, Incubus broke through with 1999's double-platinum Make Yourself and its hit single "Drive." Follow-ups Morning View (2001) and A Crow Left of the Murder... (2004) each debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, and 2006's Light Grenades became their first number-one album. The band has picked up Grammy, Billboard, and American Music Award nominations and has sold more than 23 million records worldwide. DJ Chris Kilmore has manned the turntables since the late 1990s, and bassist Nicole Row joined the lineup in 2024.
