History

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) played emotional indie rock that draws on 1990s emo bands like Mineral and American Football, stretched out with post-rock atmospheres, clean, ringing guitars and occasional trumpet. The project came from Fenton, Michigan and was led by the husband and wife pair Keith and Cathy Latinen, with other players joining around them over the years. Keith Latinen also ran Count Your Lucky Stars Records, a label closely tied to the emo revival, and the band's early release What It Takes to Move Forward came out on it in 2009. Their album You Will Eventually Be Forgotten appeared on Topshelf Records, and its long, slowly unfolding songs are often mentioned among the defining records of that revival. A listener recognises them by the unhurried build of each song, the interlocking guitars, the brass that appears at the emotional peaks and the long, wordy titles that became something of a scene habit.
