History

Formed in Manchester in 1990 around Gary Barlow, who wrote most of the material, with Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange. The early records leaned on dance routines and cover versions; by 1995 the group had turned into a ballad act, and "Back for Good" gave them a UK number one that also reached the American top ten, rare for a British boy band of that decade. Eight of their singles topped the UK chart. Williams left in the summer of 1995 and the band broke up the following year. The reunion came in 2006 as a four-piece, with Barlow now writing for stadiums rather than teen radio, and Williams rejoined for Progress in 2010 before stepping away again. Orange left in 2014. What later British boy bands borrowed was the shape of the thing: a lead writer inside the group, a big key-change ballad at the centre of the set, choreography built around it.
