History

Put together in Ireland in 1998, managed by Louis Walsh and signed by Simon Cowell, with Shane Filan and Mark Feehily sharing most of the lead vocals alongside Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne and Brian McFadden. Fourteen of their singles reached number one in the United Kingdom. The song shape almost never varied: a piano introduction, a first verse sung quietly from high stools, a modulation up a semitone or a tone before the last chorus, and the whole group on their feet for it. "Flying Without Wings", "Swear It Again" and "Queen of My Heart" are all built that way. McFadden left in 2004, the remaining four carried on until the split in 2012, and the band reformed in 2018. Most of the material came from outside writers, a number of them Scandinavian, which is part of why the records sound like the output of a production house rather than a band.
