History

Sigrid sings pop built for volume: a plain piano or synth figure, a chorus that lifts a full octave, and a voice with a rough grain in it that keeps the big notes from sounding polished. She came from Alesund on the west coast of Norway and arrived with Don't Kill My Vibe in 2017, a song about being talked down to by men in a studio, which set the tone for what followed. The BBC named her the winner of its Sound of 2018 poll, and Strangers gave her a hit that works as both a dance record and a breakup song, its bright chorus carrying a fairly bleak idea about loving an imagined version of someone. Part of her appeal was visual refusal: jeans, a t-shirt and no styling at a moment when pop presentation was maximal. A listener recognises her by the Scandinavian vowels, the slight crack at the top of a phrase, and choruses that arrive without any long build. The records around Strangers keep the same economy, few layers, a steady four to the floor, and a lyric that says one clear thing and repeats it until it sticks.
