Cyndi Lauper is an American singer, songwriter, and actress, born June 22, 1953, in New York City. She began her career in the late 1970s fronting the band Blue Angel before going solo. Her 1983 debut solo album, "She's So Unusual," blended pop and new wave and made her the first female artist to land four consecutive top five hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from a single album, including "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," and "She Bop." She followed it with albums such as "True Colors" (1986), "A Night to Remember" (1989), "Hat Full of Stars" (1993), "Sisters of Avalon" (1997), and later "Memphis Blues" (2010) and "Detour" (2016), moving from pop into blues and country. Lauper has won two Grammy Awards, an Emmy, and a Tony Award for composing the score of the Broadway musical "Kinky Boots." She has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide and remains an outspoken LGBTQ rights advocate, having founded the True Colors Fund.
