History

Rockets were a French band that dressed the part of their music completely: shaved heads, silver-painted skin and space costumes, playing a hybrid of rock, disco and synthesizer pop. Their guitars and live drums gave them more bite than most space disco acts, while vocoders, synth effects and robotic vocals supplied the science-fiction atmosphere. The breakthrough came with a spacey, driving cover of Canned Heat's "On the Road Again" in 1978, which turned a blues boogie into a pulsing electronic rock track. "Plasteroïd" in 1979 and "Galaxy" in 1980 pushed the concept further, and "Galaxy" in particular is remembered as the band at its most polished, with layered synthesizers and a steady, danceable rock beat. Although French, Rockets found their largest audience in Italy, where their costumed shows and records made them one of the most popular foreign acts of the period. They are recognised by the vocoder voice, the mix of electric guitar and synth arpeggios, and a theatrical, cartoon-futurist image that was part of the music rather than decoration.
