History

Space built a whole image around synthesizers at a moment when most disco still ran on strings and horns. The French group was led by keyboardist and composer Didier Marouani, and their 1977 debut single "Magic Fly" became a major European hit: an instrumental with a cool, gliding synth melody over a steady disco beat, with almost no vocals. On stage and in photos the musicians wore space suits and helmets that hid their faces, which suited music that sounded more like a transmission from orbit than a club band. The debut album "Magic Fly" and the follow-up "Deliverance" in 1977 developed the formula with longer suites, arpeggiated bass lines and vocoder touches, and "Just Blue" in 1978 continued it. Space are often named alongside Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone as the sound that pointed disco toward electronic dance music. Marouani later kept the project alive under various names and became especially popular in the Soviet Union. The signature is clear: lead synth lines carrying the melody, a four-on-the-floor pulse and a clean, futuristic sheen.
