History

Foghat played relentless, boogie-driven blues rock built on slide guitar and long, rolling grooves. The band formed in London in 1971 when singer and guitarist Lonesome Dave Peverett, bassist Tony Stevens and drummer Roger Earl left Savoy Brown and joined slide guitarist Rod Price. Their self-titled 1972 debut, produced by Dave Edmunds, opened with a hard, swinging take on Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You", which set the pattern: Chicago blues material pumped up to arena volume. Although British, Foghat found most of their audience in the United States, touring there constantly. Fool for the City in 1975 gave them "Slow Ride", an eight-minute boogie workout that became a classic rock radio staple, and Foghat Live in 1977 captured what made them a concert draw. The band are recognised by Price's gleaming slide lines, Peverett's shouting vocals and a shuffle rhythm that locks in and refuses to let go, the essence of 70s hard rock boogie.
