History
Captain Beyond played hard rock that behaves like progressive music: songs run into each other, riffs change metre mid-phrase, and whole album sides flow as one suite. The band formed in Los Angeles at the start of the 1970s with a line-up drawn from bigger names. Singer Rod Evans had fronted the first Deep Purple, guitarist Larry Reinhardt, known as Rhino, and bassist Lee Dorman came from Iron Butterfly, and drummer Bobby Caldwell had played with Johnny Winter. They signed to Capricorn, a Southern rock label. The self-titled debut from 1972 is the record that built their reputation: tight, jagged riffs, odd time signatures, spacey lyrics and short linked pieces that feel closer to a single long work than a set of songs. Sufficiently Breathless in 1973 softened the edges, with a new drummer and Latin percussion pushing the grooves toward something warmer and looser. They never sold on the scale of the bands their members came from, but the debut became a cult reference for heavy psych and stoner players, who recognise it by its lurching rhythms and Evans's cool, detached vocal.
