History

Acid Mothers Temple make psychedelic rock at full blast: long, overdriven guitar jams, droning riffs, cosmic synth noise, chanting and sudden collapses into free-form freakout. Guitarist Kawabata Makoto formed the group in Japan in 1995, and from the start it worked less like a band than a collective, with dozens of players passing through and several versions of the group active at the same time. The name has spawned a family of projects, among them Acid Mothers Temple & the Cosmic Inferno, plus Acid Mothers Gong and Acid Mothers Guru Guru, joint ventures with members of the European bands whose spirit the group shares. The discography is enormous, and albums such as "Pataphisical Freak Out MU!!", "New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple" and "Electric Heavyland" span everything from floating space rock to riff marathons. Constant touring abroad made them one of the most familiar Japanese underground acts outside Japan, known for the volume, the length and the ecstatic chaos of the jams.
