RAYE
2020s orchestral jazz-soul theatre from the 2020s: big band brass, pizzicato string stabs, swung jazz piano, theatrical and defiant in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History
RAYE spent years writing songs for other people and singing hooks on dance records before she was able to put out an album of her own, and she said so publicly, in detail, while it was still happening. My 21st Century Blues arrived independently and turned that frustration into material. Escapism. is the track that opened it up, seven minutes of a bad night narrated in the first person over a hard club beat, with a verse from 070 Shake. Black Mascara. keeps the dance floor and drops the narrative. Ice Cream Man. drops the beat entirely and describes an assault in a flat, steady voice, and it is the song that changed how she was written about. The singing draws on jazz and torch phrasing more than on pop: she sits behind the beat, bends notes late, and moves from a whisper to full volume inside a bar. In 2024 she took six Brit Awards in one night, more than anyone had managed before. Very little on the record sounds like a compromise made with radio in mind.
