History
Normani came out of Fifth Harmony with the sharpest dance training of anyone in the group and built a solo run around it. Motivation is the clearest statement: a bright, brassy record that reaches straight back to the turn of the millennium, when a single was also a routine and the routine was half the point. Wild Side went the other way, slow and heavy, built on an Aaliyah sample with Cardi B trading verses. Dancing with a Stranger, the duet with Sam Smith, showed a third register, restrained and conversational. The voice is light rather than heavy, mixed close and layered in stacks rather than pushed for volume, which leaves room for the groove underneath. Singles kept arriving for years before a debut album finally did, and the long gap became part of the story: an artist whose reputation rested on a handful of tracks and a great deal of choreography. What listeners recognise is the snap of the rhythm and the way she sits just behind the beat.
