History
Obsequiae play black metal shaped by medieval music: winding, modal guitar melodies that sound like old dances and chants transposed to distorted guitars, set against a raw, cold production and interrupted by interludes for medieval harp. The project was created in Minnesota by guitarist and vocalist Tanner Anderson, and it grew into one of the best-known names in what is often called medieval black metal. Suspended in the Brume of Eos, the 2011 debut, introduced the idea of long, interweaving lead lines that recall early polyphony more than typical tremolo riffing. Aria of Vernal Tombs, released in 2015 on 20 Buck Spin, was widely praised and made the harp pieces a defining part of the album's flow. The Palms of Sorrowed Kings followed in 2019, continuing the same approach with a slightly fuller sound. Obsequiae's music is less about aggression than atmosphere: forests, ruins and faded courts. Listeners recognise it by the melodic twin guitars moving like a consort of old instruments, rasped vocals kept low in the mix, and the quiet harp passages between the storms.
