History

Saor plays what its creator calls Caledonian metal: long, sweeping pieces of atmospheric black metal carried by Scottish folk melody, with bagpipes, fiddle, tin whistle and flute rising over tremolo guitars and steady, driving drums. The project belongs to Andy Marshall from Glasgow, who writes and plays most of the music himself and brings in guest musicians for folk instruments and clean vocals. It began in 2013 under the name Àrsaidh before becoming Saor, a Gaelic word for free. Roots and Aura established the style: a handful of long tracks, often past the ten-minute mark, built on big, uplifting melodies more than on the bleakness usually associated with black metal. Later albums such as Forgotten Paths refined it with fuller production and more varied folk arrangements. Marshall's lyrics draw on Scottish landscape, history and poetry, and the records have found an audience well beyond the black metal underground. A listener recognises Saor by soaring, almost anthemic folk melodies, harsh vocals set far back in a wide mix, and the constant presence of pipes and whistles over the storm.
