History
DIIV play a bright, restless version of shoegaze and dream pop, built on interlocking clean guitar lines, driving krautrock-style drums and vocals half buried in reverb. The band began in Brooklyn in 2011 as a project of Zachary Cole Smith and released its early records on Captured Tracks. The debut Oshin in 2012 set out the style: fast, looping guitar melodies with a watery chorus shimmer, a propulsive rhythm section and songs that feel like one long drift. Smith has named Malian guitar players among the influences on that early material, alongside My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Nirvana and post-punk. Is the Is Are in 2016 expanded the sound into a longer, darker double album, and Deceiver in 2019 turned heavier, with thicker distortion and a slower, more grinding weight closer to classic shoegaze. The band later moved to Fantasy Records. DIIV became one of the central American guitar bands in the shoegaze revival of the 2010s, and a listener recognises them by chiming, circular guitar figures, a steady motorik pulse and a hazy, understated voice floating inside the mix.
