History
Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American rapper who grew up in the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, the son of jazz and blues musician Olu Dara. He began rapping as a teenager under the name Nasty Nas, mentored by producer Large Professor, and made his recorded debut on Main Source's 1991 single "Live at the Barbeque." Signed to Columbia Records in 1992, he released his debut album, Illmatic, on April 19, 1994; built on production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip and Large Professor, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made and was later inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. His follow-up, It Was Written (1996), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Nas is closely associated with East Coast hip-hop, boom bap and jazz rap, and became known for a highly publicized 2001-2005 feud with Jay-Z. After thirteen nominations, he won his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2021, for King's Disease.
