History
Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip-hop group formed in Staten Island, New York City, in 1992. Its roots trace to a trio of cousins, Gary Grice, Robert Diggs, and Russell Jones, who had rapped together since the early 1980s; Diggs (RZA) eventually pulled together a nine-strong crew that also included GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Ol' Dirty Bastard, with Cappadonna joining later. Signed to Loud/RCA, they released the landmark debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993, credited with reviving East Coast hip-hop with its raw, sample-heavy, martial-arts-themed sound. RZA then let members sign solo deals with different labels while still crediting the Wu-Tang collective, an unusual arrangement he called a "financial movement." The 1997 follow-up, Wu-Tang Forever, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In one of hip-hop's strangest footnotes, their 2015 album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin was pressed as a single copy and sold to Martin Shkreli for $2 million, the most expensive work of music ever sold. The group is set for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026.
