History
The Roots are an American hip-hop band formed in Philadelphia in 1987 by MC Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. Unlike most hip-hop acts of their era, they built their sound around a full live band, drums, bass, keys, guitar, and horns, rather than samples and turntables, giving their music a jazzy, improvisational edge often labeled conscious or alternative rap. Their 1999 album Things Fall Apart became their breakthrough, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and going platinum; the single "You Got Me," featuring Erykah Badu, won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2000. They later won another Grammy in 2011 for the John Legend collaboration Wake Up!. In 2002 they became the first hip-hop group to perform at Lincoln Center, and Rolling Stone named them one of the 20 greatest live acts in 2003. Since 2009 they have served as the house band for Jimmy Fallon's Late Night and Tonight Show, bringing their live musicianship to millions nightly.
