Smoky west coast horror rap from the 1990s: dusty filtered loop, creeping organ chord, dub heavy bass, menacing and hypnotic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Formed in South Gate, south of Los Angeles, around B-Real, Sen Dog and producer DJ Muggs. Their 1991 debut set the formula and Black Sunday (1993) entered the Billboard 200 at number one on the back of Insane in the Brain. The sound rests on two pieces that should not fit: Muggs built beds out of murky, detuned loops and horror-movie organ, and over them B-Real rapped in a pinched nasal squeal that is recognisable within a bar. Sen Dog, born in Cuba and the brother of Mellow Man Ace, answered in a much lower register, which kept the tracks from thinning out. Temples of Boom (1995) went darker and slower still. Percussionist Eric Bobo, son of Latin jazz drummer Willie Bobo, later joined the live band. Cannabis advocacy ran through the catalogue from the start and the group kept recording into the 2020s.
