History
dead prez is an American hip hop duo made up of M-1 and stic.man, formed in 1996. The pair met at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, bonding over a shared love of music and leftist politics; M-1 was drawn to the Black Panther Party and later spent time with the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement in Chicago before the two refocused on music. Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar discovered them in New York and signed them to Loud Records. Their sound blends raw, confrontational political hip hop and conscious hip hop with themes of social justice, self-determination, and Pan-Africanism. Their 2000 debut album, Let's Get Free, produced their best-known single, "Hip-Hop," whose instrumental became Dave Chappelle's Comedy Central show entrance music and later scored the opening of the Netflix series Hip-Hop Evolution. A 2004 follow-up, RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta, arrived on Columbia Records, and the duo remained active through mixtapes (including entries hosted by DJ Green Lantern and DJ Drama) and a 2012 album, Information Age. They're also known for igniting dollar bills and tossing apples into crowds during shows as a statement on money and health.
