History

Brad Jordan recorded in Houston for Rap-A-Lot, first inside the Geto Boys with Willie D and Bushwick Bill. Mind Playing Tricks on Me, from We Can't Be Stopped (1991), is the track that carried the group nationally and it did it by describing paranoia and insomnia in the first person at a time when almost nobody in rap wrote that way. His solo work took that further. Mr. Scarface Is Back (1991) opened the run and The Diary (1994) is the one usually named first, with the mood coming from live blues guitar, mournful horn samples and a low, weary voice that never pushes. The Untouchable (1997) reached number one on the Billboard 200. He later ran Def Jam South as president and signed Ludacris. Depression, guilt and death recur across the catalogue as subjects handled plainly, not as shock material.
