History
Mos Def emerged from Brooklyn, New York, in the mid-1990s as one of the defining voices of conscious hip-hop. Born Dante Terrell Smith on December 11, 1973, he broke through after joining fellow Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli in 1996 to form the duo Black Star. Their 1998 debut, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, became an underground touchstone, spawning the singles "Definition" and "Respiration" (the latter featuring Common). His 1999 solo debut, Black on Both Sides, drew widespread critical acclaim for its blend of jazz, soul, and politically charged lyricism, and his fourth album, The Ecstatic (2009), was similarly well received. His 2000 single "Oh No," with Pharoahe Monch and Nate Dogg, remains his only entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo act. Beyond music, he built a substantial acting career (The Italian Job, 16 Blocks, Be Kind Rewind) and hosted HBO's Def Poetry Jam from 2002 to 2007. In 2011 he began performing under his adopted name, Yasiin Bey.
