History
Michael Jackson was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, and rose to fame as the child lead singer of the Jackson 5, the family Motown act his father Joe formed from his brothers. Signed to Motown in 1969, the group scored four consecutive number-one hits ("I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," "I'll Be There") before moving to Epic Records as the Jacksons in the mid-1970s. Jackson's solo career defined pop's 1980s peak: Off the Wall (1979) established him as a solo force, and Thriller (1982) became the best-selling album of all time, topping the Billboard chart for 37 weeks and winning eight Grammys. At the 1983 Motown 25 television special, his performance of "Billie Jean" introduced the moonwalk to a national audience and cemented his title as the King of Pop. He followed with Bad (1987) and Dangerous (1991), continuing his run of number-one singles. Jackson died in 2009 at age 50; he remains one of the most commercially successful and influential recording artists in popular music history.
