History

Bobby Brown is the singer who made new jack swing a mainstream format. He came up in a teenage vocal group before going solo, and the solo records swapped smooth boy-group harmony for something harder: swung drum machine patterns borrowed from hip-hop, stabbing synth brass, and a delivery that slides between singing and rapping depending on what the bar needs. Don't Be Cruel in 1988 sold in the millions and set the sound of late-1980s American radio, and he won a Grammy in 1990. My Prerogative is the clearest statement of the style, built on a snarling bassline and a refrain that turns defensiveness into swagger, while Every Little Step shows the softer side of the same production toolkit. The dancing mattered as much as the vocal; he performed like a rapper with a choreographer, which is now standard and was not then. A listener recognises the hard swung snare and the slightly nasal, conversational vocal tone.
