History

Martyn is the alias of Dutch producer and DJ Martijn Deijkers, and his music draws a line between drum and bass, dubstep, house and techno: shuffling, swung rhythms, warm, melancholic synth chords and deep bass that borrow from all of them without settling in one. He started out in the Netherlands in the mid-1990s as a drum and bass DJ. When he began releasing his own 12-inch singles in the mid-2000s, the influence of dubstep producers such as Kode9 pulled his sound toward slower, more spacious rhythms mixed with techno's steady drive. His own label 3024 became the home for much of that work, and his debut album Great Lengths in 2009 was widely praised as one of the records that defined the loose post-dubstep space between UK bass and techno. Ghost People followed in 2011 on Brainfeeder, and The Air Between Words in 2014 leaned further toward house and techno. He also mixed Fabric 50 for the London club's series and later moved to the Washington, D.C. area. A listener recognises Martyn by the shuffling, broken groove, the wistful chord progressions and a bass weight that betrays his drum and bass roots.
