History
Scuba built his sound in the gap between dubstep and techno, keeping the half-step space and heavy sub of the London scene while pulling the rhythm toward four-to-the-floor pressure and long, hypnotic builds. Scuba is the alias of Paul Rose, a Londoner who founded the Hotflush Recordings label and later moved to Berlin, where he ran the SUB:STANCE nights at Berghain. That move matters to the music: his debut album A Mutual Antipathy still sat close to the dark, spacious end of dubstep, while Triangulation leaned into techno textures, cold pads and a steadier pulse. By Personality the tracks had grown brighter and more club-facing, closer to house and big-room techno than to the South London sound he started from. Hotflush also gave early releases to other producers working the same seam. His tracks are easy to spot by clipped, metallic percussion, deep but controlled bass, and arrangements that ride tension for a long time before anything breaks open.
