History
Main Source made some of the most sample-dense, jazz-flecked hip-hop of the early 1990s, and the sound was driven by Large Professor, who rapped and handled much of the production. The group joined him with the DJs K-Cut and Sir Scratch, brothers with Canadian roots, and worked out of the New York scene. Breaking Atoms (1991) is the record they are known for: layered loops of jazz and funk breaks, tight scratching and a relaxed, conversational delivery on songs such as Looking at the Front Door, Just Hangin' Out and Fakin' the Funk. The album also carries Live at the Barbeque, where a very young Nas made one of his first recorded appearances. Large Professor left soon after, and the remaining members continued with a new vocalist, Mikey D, on Fuck What You Think, which never reached the audience of the debut. The group's reputation rests on that first album, which producers still treat as a reference for how to stack samples without losing the groove.
