History

Madlib builds beats the way a crate digger thinks: dusty jazz, soul and library records cut into loose, off-kilter loops with drums that drag just behind the beat. He came up in Oxnard, California, first with the crew Lootpack, and became the central producer of the Stones Throw label. He rarely works under one name. As Yesterdays New Quintet he played and programmed an imaginary jazz band, and Angles Without Edges (2001) is the clearest document of that project, part live instrument, part sampler. Blue Note then gave him access to its archive, and Shades of Blue (2003) reworked the label's catalogue into hazy, head-nodding hip-hop instrumentals. Around the same years he recorded as Quasimoto, rapping in a pitched-up voice, made Champion Sound with J Dilla as Jaylib, and produced Madvillainy with MF DOOM. Listeners know his work by its warm tape hiss, abrupt edits, short song lengths and the sense of a record collection being played back half-remembered.
