History

LL Cool J arrived with a voice built for a boombox: loud, clipped, pushed right to the front of the mix, with the braggadocio delivered as if daring anyone to answer. He came out of Hollis in Queens and was one of the first acts Def Jam released, which put him at the centre of the shift from park-jam rap to records made for radio and for arenas. I Need Love did something the genre had not tried at that scale, a slow rap love song, and it opened a lane hip hop has used ever since. Mama Said Knock You Out answered critics who thought he had gone soft: a hard drum loop, a snarling hook, a performance with no space left in it, and the track took a Grammy for rap. Doin' It shows the later mode, smoother and more melodic, built around a sung chorus. His records hold up because the rapping is physical, breath and emphasis doing work that production later took over. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, by which point he had spent years acting on television too.
