History
Magic! play pop songs on a reggae chassis: offbeat guitar skanks, a light one-drop groove and a big, clean chorus sung by Nasri Atweh. The band came together in Toronto. Atweh was already a working pop songwriter and producer when he met guitarist Mark Pellizzer in the studio, and while Pellizzer was playing a reggae figure on guitar, Atweh suggested they start a band in the mould of a modern-day Police. Bassist Ben Spivak joined in 2013, the same year the debut single Rude came out. Rude went on to top the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it defined the group: a polite, slightly aggrieved plea to a girlfriend's father set over a bouncy, radio-bright reggae beat. The debut album Don't Kill the Magic followed in 2014, then Primary Colours in 2016 and Expectations in 2018. The band later moved its base to Los Angeles. The Police and Bob Marley and the Wailers are the stated touchstones, and the result is recognisable at once: tight, songwriter-built pop with a reggae lilt rather than roots grit.
