History

Cidade Negra gave Brazilian reggae its biggest mainstream voice of the 1990s, taking a sound rooted in Jamaican one drop and pairing it with the melodic warmth of Brazilian pop. The band came out of Belford Roxo in the Baixada Fluminense, the working-class belt around Rio de Janeiro, in the mid-1980s, and its early records carried the social edge of that place. The turning point came when Toni Garrido took over as singer, and Sobre Todas as Forças in 1994 opened the door to national radio. Songs such as "Onde Você Mora?", "A Sombra da Maldade" and "Pensamento" became fixtures across Brazil, and O Erê kept the run going. The formula was steady skank guitar, a deep round bass, gentle keyboards and Garrido's soft, clear tenor, with lyrics that moved between love, faith and life on the periphery. Cidade Negra showed that reggae sung in Portuguese could fill arenas, and much of the Brazilian reggae that followed grew in the space the band opened.
