History
Reggae fusion is reggae or dancehall crossed with pop, hip-hop, R&B, rock or electronic music. Musicians had been mixing reggae with other styles since the early 1970s under names like reggae-pop or reggae-disco, but the term itself only appeared in the late 1990s. The core grew from dancehall of the late 1980s and early 1990s, whose riddims borrowed from R&B and hip-hop, so Shabba Ranks, Super Cat and Buju Banton are counted among its pioneers. Snow's Informer and Ini Kamoze's Here Comes the Hotstepper both went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Oddly, the big push came from dancehall failing in America: when its hardcore lyrics and heavy patois stopped selling, deejays began toasting over softer pop and hip-hop beats. Shaggy's album Hot Shot produced two US number ones, It Wasn't Me and Angel, No Doubt made a full reggae fusion album with Rock Steady in 2002, and Sean Paul followed with Get Busy and Temperature. Europe had its own branch, Euro reggae, led by Ace of Base and Dr. Alban. In Jamaica the style became a radio staple, though when Shaggy's On a Mission became the official Jamaica 50 song in 2012, many questioned its Jamaican credentials.
