History
Linda is the stage name of Svetlana Geiman, and her records sit at an odd angle to nearly everything on Russian radio in the mid-1990s. The first album, Pesni tibetskih lam, came out in 1994; the one that made the name, Vorona, followed in 1996, made with producer Maksim Fadeev. The music pulled Eastern modal melody and sampled percussion into an electronic pop frame, and the voice worked low and throaty rather than bright, closer to incantation than to a radio chorus. The rhythmic base sits nearer to trip-hop than to the dancefloor: slow tempo, drums heavy and sparse. Marihuana drew the expected trouble over its title, which did not stop the album from selling. Her stage presentation pushed in the same direction and had little in common with the estrada manner of the period. More albums followed, but Vorona stayed the record listeners reach for first, and it is the one usually cited when the question of Russian ethno-electronica comes up.
