History
Tekhnologiya formed in Moscow in 1990 out of the break-up of Biokonstruktor, and the debut album Vsyo, chto ty hochesh followed in 1991 with Nazhmi na knopku and Strannye tantsy on it. The Depeche Mode comparison followed the band everywhere, and the record invites it: cold sequencer bass, a deliberately flat vocal, hooks short and almost slogan-like, delivered without a single extra movement. What made it land locally was that the detachment was in Russian, played on equipment that was scarce in the country at the time. Vladimir Nechitaylo sang; the electronics were handled by Roman Ryabtsev and Leonid Velichkovsky, both of whom had come out of Biokonstruktor. Ryabtsev left a couple of years later for solo work, and the group carried on in other configurations. The 1991 album is still the reference point for Russian synth-pop of that era.
