Russian pop

Polished Russian-language pop with euro-dance production.

History

Russian pop grew out of Soviet estrada, the variety song of the Soviet era, and kept its idols: Alla Pugacheva and Valery Leontiev held on to their audience through the 1990s and 2000s. Compared with American pop, the Soviet version was more lyrical, avoided sexual subtext, treated swearing as taboo and went through censorship, so its nearest relatives were the pop traditions of Italy and France; Soviet television even ran Melodies and Rhythms of Foreign Pop, which showed the best of the Sanremo festival. The first national hit parade, Zvukovaya Dorozhka, appeared in the 1970s, and the next decade produced songs that became a calling card of the country: Sofia Rotaru's "Lavender", Pugacheva's "Million Roses", Zemlyane's "Trava u doma". In the late 1980s Laskovy May and Mirazh pulled the sound toward eurodisco and hi-NRG, and in 1990 Gorky Park's "Moscow Calling" became an international hit. The crisis years of the early 1990s launched a new generation, from Valery Meladze and Tatiana Bulanova to Na-Na, Ivanushki International and Ruki Vverh. By 2020 the new names were Zivert, Niletto and Danya Milokhin.
